TGPR – No Frills Time Trial Cold but WORTH IT!

TVR and Alabama Regions held the second “No Frills” fall TT/PDX at Talladega Grand Prix Raceway in Munford Alabama on October 27-28.  TGPR is a 1.4 mile motorcycle track that is fast and flowing.  It is  a fantastic facility for TT and PDX.

 Brett Whisenant served as Chief Instructor and ran a widely acclaimed PDX instruction.  Ted Theodore ran the TT Novice School for the TT Novices who were looking to qualify for their full TT License (and all did).  At the close of each day, the drivers manned the corner stations so that the workers could get track time.

 Although we were threatened by Sandy, the weekend was dry if a bit blustery with temps in the mid 50’s.  Thirty drivers posted TT times and 18 ran the PDX.  Despite the cool temperatures and overcast conditions, several new track records were set.  Several  drivers beat their previous best time as well.

 One of the features was the “Runoffs Roulette”.  Drivers paid a small entry fee to run 4 hot laps after lunch on Sunday.  The closest to their previous best time recorded was declared the winner.  Andy Tow walked away with the pot this year.

SCCA TGPR Time Trial – Great Racing in Alabama

 Tennessee Valley and Alabama Regions combined to put on their Annual Time Trials Track Trials event and School at Talladega Grand Prix Raceway in Munford, AL on April 14-15, 2012.  Simply put, WHAT A FANTASTIC WEEKEND!

First, we had 59 TT drivers which is the best ever at TGPR and the highest TT driver count of any SEDIV championship event in the last 6 years (or at least as far back as I have records).  There were a few others who were there but could not get their cars out on track or the number would have been higher.

Second, we had 15 TT Students which is another high water mark for the TT School.  There were even a few more potential TT Students who could not finish their car preparations in time.

Third, we had a full group of PDX drivers each day which is another significant increase.  One of the inducements was for a driver to work a day and get a PDX day for the low fee of $100.

Fourth, Racer Parts Wholesale was our sponsor and provided tire gauges, shirts, decals, gift certificates and other goodies to the workers and participants.  The RPW support was definitely appreciated.

I could mention the weather which featured lows in the 50’s, highs in the 80’s and enough cloud cover to make everyone feel just great.  I could also mention the 11 new TGPR TT Track records that were set by Clint McMahan (F600), Steve Conrad (FF), Dave Cutchins (FS), Mike Chandler (FV), Robby Boyett (GTA), Butch Kummer (GT1), Joe Armstrong (ITO), Bobby Bitterman (ITR), Joe Clayburn (Spec Miata), Michael Garoust (SSP), and Leon Drake (SU).  Everyone had the opportunity for over 2 hours of on track time.  Even the workers had 30 minute lap sessions at the end of each day with the drivers manning the corner stations.

A new feature and a highlight of the weekend was the Run-off Roulette that we ran on Sunday.  The drivers were grouped by car type/speed and each got a warm-up lap and 4 hot laps to record a time.  This was a bracket competition where the First, Second and Third Place winners were those who recorded a time that was closest (+/-) to their previous best time on track.  Each of the 23 drivers entered by throwing $10 into the Prize Pot and the event sweetened that pot some more.  The winner was John Waight at a scant margin of 0.012 seconds off his best time.  That is no more than a sneeze.  Bryon Webb (0.199) and Richard Pannell (0.420) were close behind him to capture their share of the pot.

There were many people who put in a lot of time to make this event a success.  Without the weekend workers and the people who did the pre-event work, we would not have had a success.  Without trying to name everyone (and apologies to those I forget), I have to thank Eden Powell, Steve Conrad, Rich Crowell, Mark Rothermel, Ricky Ragan, John Waight, Sara and Chaistit Tongsuvone, Mark Kilgore, George Bugg, Jim & Diane Eckert, Chuck and Suzette Schultz, Clyde Bales, Spike Pannell and many others.  Ted Theodore could not get his Special running in time so he brings his CSP Miata and IT7 cars so 3 drivers could compete.  Ted also provided special gifts for the workers.  Jim Eckert did sound on both sides of the track so the drivers could see how they would fare against the stricter Atlanta Motorsports Park sound restrictions.  Then there are the many drivers who made the trek to middle Alabama for the event.  Without both the drivers and the workers, there could not be an event.  THANX DRIVERS AND WORKERS

SCCA Time Trial Licensing – Here’s How!

How does a person obtain a license to compete in SEDIV Track Trials (Level 3) and Hill Climbs (Level 4)?  The easy way out would be to tell you to go to and figure it out.  It is all there but sometimes it is easier to understand if someone distills it down to simple steps.  Everything I say herein is related to Track Trials (Level 3) and Hill Climbs (Level 4) and not necessarily to Level 1 (PDX) and Level 2 (Club Trials) which do not require a SCCA TT permit.

 1. SCCA MEMBERSHIP: You must be a SCCA member to compete in Time Trials (TT).  You can be a regular full time member or use one of the Weekend Memberships that are available.  SCCA would like us to charge $15 for a Weekend Membership but it can defray the cost of a regular membership when you join.

2.LICENSES ACCEPTED:  If you have a SCCA Regional, National, Professional, Vintage, Novice Competition License or a Canadian ASN-FIA License, they are sufficient for racing in Time Trials.  If you have a road race license from a recognized racing organization (BMWCCA, POC, NASA, Rally America, etc), it is usually sufficient for Time Trials.  The other licenses are permitted will be specified in the event Supplemental Regulations (Supps).  SCCA membership (i.e., weekend membership) is still required.  SCCA licenses are often recognized by other racing groups.

3.NOVICE TT PERMIT:  Other than the above, step one would to obtain a Novice Time Trials permit.  The permit application form and medical forms can be found the websites below.  The cost of the permit is $35 and the only medical information required is a self certification of your medical history.  No doctor’s exam is necessary at this point unless you have some special medical condition and SCCA will let you know that when they review your application.  You can then race using the Novice TT permit.  Some events are set up such that the Chief Steward can issue TT Novice credentials at the event itself.  Contact the particular event chairman.  Finish 3 flat track events (Level 3) without incident, have the Chief Steward of each event sign off on your Novice Permit Book, and you can then apply for your full TT permit (see Step 6).

4. HAVE TRACK EXPERIENCE?:  Alternatives to the novice TT permit route do exist.  If you are a former competition (race, TT, etc.) license holder or have significant track experience, that can be used to grant you a full TT permit without going thru the Novice permit stage.  There are a few officials (TTAC representatives, Divisional Administrator, Chief Stewards, certain Regional Executives, etc.) within SEDIV who can sign off on your full TT permit application.

5. SEDIV TT SCHOOL:  Another alternative is somewhat unique to SEDIV.  SEDIV holds a TT School at the spring event held at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway each year.  At the school, you are provided with instruction on flags, safety, passing, and track awareness and observed by a TT instructor/mentor assigned to you.  You will be driving on track with fully licensed TT drivers and other students.  If at the end of the weekend, you have performed satisfactorily, a full TT permit application can be signed off for you.  The question to be answered by each instructor/mentor is this: “Do I want to be on the track at speed alongside this driver?”  I can truthfully say that not everyone passes the TT School – it is not automatic.

6. FULL TT PERMIT:  Applying for the full TT license is rather simple.  The permit application form is the same either for a Novice or Full TT permit.  If you have gone thru the Step 4 or Step 5 process, the form will be signed in the middle “Upgrades” section by an authorized individual and can be used for the full TT permit application.  For the full TT permit, you will have to go thru the complete medical forms consisting of your self evaluation and a doctor’s evaluation.  The cost of the full license application is $35.  If you have already applied for a TT Novice permit and apply for the full License within 90 days of the Novice permit application, then there is no additional charge.

7. NOTE: You do need to have a State driver’s license.  If you are under 18, then the usual Minor Waiver signed by your parents has to be provided as well.  This is true for either the Novice or full TT permit.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Anytime you send applications or forms or participation books to SCCA remember to make a copy first.  Reason #1 is in case they get misplaced/lost.  Reason #2 is that while you are waiting for SCCA to send you a new membership card, you can use the copy as proof of your license level.

SEDIV TT Committee Minutes – 3/22/12

   SEDIV Time Trials Championship Committee Conference Call Minutes
After a few minutes of technical difficulties, the call commenced at 7:10pm CDT.
Present on the call were:

Craig Farr presented a status on the Talladega Grand Prix Raceway event preparations. He indicated that there are 37 entrants to date with several more verbal commitments and 14 or more students. At this early date, the numbers are looking very good. He needs additional instructors and will be contacting experienced entrants to solicit volunteers to work with students.

Ted Theodore reported that preparations for CCR’s Chasing the Dragon I are under way. CCR has some great ideas on involving the community and making the event even better than last year. For example the Junior Crew Chief program will match local high school students with a driver for the weekend. The students will help with car preparation and get up close with the drivers all weekend to get a better feel for the sport. The drivers get “free help” and the students get an experience to talk about for a long time!

Chasing the Dragon will also be the kickoff event for the Novice Hill Climb program. The committee voted to approve the rules proposed by Craig and Ted on a case by case basis providing an opportunity for novice permit holders to run certain L4 events with a couple of classroom sessions, supervision and individual instruction. “Novices” and “First Timer on the hill” drivers will be provided classroom sessions and a van trip up the hill for familiarization. And Novices will be paired with experienced drivers as mentor/coach for the event. The program description will be added to the SEDiv TT rules and posted on the SEDiv TT website as soon as possible.

Art Trier was on the call for the first time representing the Central Florida Region’s L1 (PDX) program. Art reported that they are planning 4 PDX events in conjunction with road races in at Daytona and Sebring. Their events are extremely popular and they may have to limit entries until they can build their instructor base to keep up with the Novice entries.

George Bugg reminded the committee that he will be stepping down as DA at the end of this season. Any member of the committee interested in applying for the position should contact George. George will present all interested parties to the committee for approval and qualified applicants will be presented to the SEDiv leadership at the mid-year meeting for a final vote.

First of all, we want to thank Cool Shirt for being the SEDIV TT Championship Series Sponsor again this year and also for the support they have given to individual events.  We greatly appreciate their continued support of the SEDIV TT program and look forward to another successful season for the Cool Shirt Championship Series.

We also need to recognize the SEDIV TT leadership who have worked hard to make the SEDIV TT Program a success.  George Bugg TVR (TT Administrator), Joe Olivera SCR (TTAC Representative), Mark Rothermel TVR (TTSC Representative), and the TT Committee members: Craig Farr TVR, Robert Frazier Buccaneer, Nick Hallman SCR, David McDaniel Chattanooga, Tom Shuman ATL, Ted Theodore CCR, Jerry Vogel ALA.

2011 Results

The TT Program struggled with continuing low entries and event financial difficulties but with some success given the economic times and other factors.  Started the year with 10 scheduled events (6 flat tracks and 4 Hill Climbs) but finished at 6 events (4 flat tracks and 2 Hill Climbs).  We flirted with a new Hill Climb in North Georgia, Tate Reserve, but that could not be accomplished this year.

Here is a summary of the 2011 TT events attempted and accomplished.

  • Chasing the Dragon (CCR) – June – Replaced Wolf Ridge due to a huge effort by Ted Theodore and CCR  34 Entries
  • Eagle’s Nest (CCR) – August – Cancelled due to landowners wanting $10K rent
  • CMP (SCR) – Sept – Removed as a TT Points event – held as a PDX/Club Trial
  • Crow Mountain Hill Climb (TVR) – Oct – 27 Entries
  • “No Frills” TGPR (TVR/AL) – Nov – Replaced RR – 42 Entries
  • Roebling Road (Bucc) – Nov  – Cancelled by Region

Overall, we averaged 30 drivers per event which is consistent over the last 2 years.  Fifteen Regions participated — CCR (31%), ALA (15%) and TVR (14%) provided 60% of the Drivers.  There were 182 entrants in 38 car classes with 118 different drivers.  20% of the drivers ran 3 or more events.  We had 15 Class Champions who each ran 3 or more events.  The most popular classes were CSP (9%), SM (8%), and FV (7%).  Solo based cars made up 25% of the entries while the Wings n’ Things provided 28%.  So you can see where the strength of the TT program lies.

One of our challenges is to get the 68% of drivers who ran only one event and the 58% of drivers who only ran local events to participate in more events.

Last December the TT Committee voted to allow Club Trials (Level 2) points to count toward the SEDIV TT Championship.  This was done primarily to boost overall entries and encourage participants to “step up” to the Level 3/4 events.  It was not the raging success we had hoped.  CMP and TGPR had 27/29 entries each of which 8 and 5 were Level 2 respectively.  Therefore we plan to revert back to the original Championship Series structure and allow points only for L3 and L4 entrants.

As you heard last night, CCR was awarded the Rich Shafer Award for having the best TT event of 2011, Chasing the Dragon Hill Climb.  CCR pulled together a new Hill Climb venue, Chasing the Dragon, with a lot of local community support from Robbinsville, NC.  They are even repaving the road and Dragon will be back twice in 2012.  TVR was awarded the Walt Wurzbach Award for their continued management excellence evidenced by the Crow Mountain Hill Climb and the “No Frills” TT.  When the Roebling TT was cancelled in September, TVR asked the TT community what they wanted and dreamed up the “No Frills” TT.  TVR executed it with assistance from Alabama Region and it was the highest attended TT event of the year by a wide margin.

2012 Event Forecast

2012 has the potential of being a fantastic season for SEDIV Time Trials Championship Series.  The Dragon will return twice along with the usual favorites at TGPR, Roebling, Road Atlanta, and Crow Mountain.  The Atlanta Motorsports Park TT should finally arrive and also serve as a check-out event for a SARRC event there.  CCR is working on an additional Hill Climb.

The Atlanta Motorsports Park event will be a double event with points for each day.  The short course (1.5 miles) will be run on Saturday with the full course (2 miles) run on Sunday.  The two Dragon Hill Climbs will have different courses.

Chattanooga Region will be pulling out of the TT business while the Nashville track is up for sale and unavailable.  As a financial decision, SCR is going to concentrate on the PDX/Level 2 events and not participate in the SEDIV TT Championship Series.

SEDIV TT Committee

The TT Committee is working on a plan to attract and retain sponsorship for the coming season.  As budgets get tighter and entries decline, additional revenue is becoming more and more important.  The Committee is investigating a variety of publicity and sponsorship opportunities and approaches.

George Bugg will be stepping down as the SEDIV DA for Time Trials at the end of the 2012 season.  In accepting the position in July 2009, he stated that “new blood” should be rotated into leadership roles in order to keep the program thriving and moving forward and suggested a 3 year term limit.  With that in mind, he will work with the Committee to identify a replacement and prepare for a smooth transition at the end of the year.  A candidate for his replacement will be presented at the mid-year meeting for consideration by the SEDIV leadership.

The TT Committee has reviewed and updated the 2009 TT Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).  This SOP has been provided to the Regional Executives and we are looking for your approval.    There are a few significant changes proposed to the 2009 SOP.  First are procedures that would formally involve the Regional Executives in the selection of SEDIV’s Time Trial Administrative Council (TTAC) and Time Trial Safety Council (TTSC) representatives.  Second is expansion of the TT Committee’s purview to include all Time Trial events, Level 1 thru Level 4.  Third is an increase from $5 to $10 per entrant in the TT Trophy fund to help us become financially independent and to provide minimal funds for promotion of TT events.

When SCCA moved SOLO I into Club Racing, they also created the 4 level Time Trial structure – PDX, Club Trial, Track Trial and Hill Climb.  The TTAC was established as the administrative body overseeing all 4 venues.  Although SEDIV has had a TTAC representative, the SEDIV TT Committee has remained chiefly concerned with the Level 3 and Level 4 SEDIV TT Championship Series.  With the increased interest from both SCCA and SEDIV in PDX and Club Trial events, the TT Committee feels that SEDIV would be better served by having a forum for communication and cooperation between all TT Events.  To that end, we propose to add representatives from each region hosting L1 and L2 Time Trials events to the Committee membership.  The Championship Series will only be for L3 and L4 events, but the additional members on the Committee will provide a central point for communication and will allow the TTAC and TTSC representatives valuable input from a wider range of the membership they represent.  The increase in the Trophy fund is requested as a means to help the program remain financially viable should the sponsorship efforts be less fruitful than hoped.  The additional funds will be used for awards and publicity/promotion of events.
